Music unfolds in time. Time unfolds in music. Music, as Susanne Langer wrote, 'makes time audible.' And, I might add, music becomes meaningful in and through time. (Kramer, 1988, p. 1)
I believe that having a deep relationship with musical time is essential when performing and hearing music. This is mandatory if one wants to have a truly meaningful experience. By "truly meaningful experience" I mean being in time with the music we hear or perform. We are no longer observing time, we are one with it.
This piece, written for Maria Catarino, was my first conscious attempt at writing music based on that belief. The choice of having a single player perform on three instruments simultaneously is the characteristic that embodies it, as it demands a complete immersion from the performer.
